Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk (whole or 2% preferred)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust to taste)

  • 3 ounces finely chopped semisweet chocolate or chocolate chips (about 1/2 cup)

Instructions

  1. In a pot, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, peppermint extract, and a pinch of kosher salt until well mixed.
  2. Place the pot on the stove over medium-low heat and warm the mixture until bubbles begin to form around the edges of the pan, being careful not to let it boil.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and add the finely chopped semisweet chocolate. Whisk continuously until the chocolate is fully melted, the mixture is glossy, and slightly thickened, about 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Pour the hot chocolate into a mug and top with lightly sweetened whipped cream or marshmallows. Sprinkle crushed candy canes on top for a festive garnish if desired.
