A simple, homemade version of char siu chicken that’s savory, caramelized, and perfect for weeknight dinners.
Ingredients
- Chicken thighs (boneless, skin-on preferred)
- Hoisin sauce
- Honey
- Soy sauce
- Five-spice powder
- Garlic
- Sesame oil
- Red food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- In a bowl, whisk together the hoisin sauce, honey, soy sauce, five-spice powder, minced garlic, and sesame oil.
- Marinate the chicken thighs in half of the sauce for at least 30 minutes or overnight for best results.
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Place the marinated chicken on a rack and roast for 20-25 minutes.
- Crank up the grill/broiler for the last 5 minutes to achieve a sticky finish, basting with reserved sauce as needed.
- Let the chicken rest before slicing and serving.
Notes
Serve over white rice, in lettuce wraps, or in bao buns. This dish is family-friendly and can be marinated overnight for better flavor.
